On Saturday, May 23, from 4:00-5:30 pm, Cooke and Patrick J. Regal, a featured essayist in Art/Film, will present a visual reading and book signing at the CAT. They will read their chapters from the book, accompanied by clips from their case studies to provide context. Regal will discuss the work of Spike Lee, focusing on how the director's live theater recordings — such as David Byrne’s American Utopia (2020) and Rodney King (2017) — add to his filmic oeuvre. Cooke will present her article on the musical group The 1975, exploring how the band’s most recent concert film, At Their Very Best (2022), and YouTube miniseries, A Theatrical Performance of an Intimate Moment (2023), comment on fan culture and celebrity performativity. The event will conclude with a casual Q&A and the opportunity to get your copy of Art/Film signed. Books will be available to purchase at the cinema.
