In their first documentary, The Fortune of Being Poetry , co-directors José Bañuelos Montes (Roanoke University) and Sally Perret (SU) and cinematographer Arnaud Perret (SU) highlight the power of poetry in Buenaventura, Colombia, to bring people together. Through traditional documentary interviews and artistic video poems, the film captures the poets as they confront issues related to race, gender, social, and environmental inequality from a perspective of fatalism mixed with hope. The poets teach us that no matter our circumstances, we have the power to resist hate in favor of love, humility and respect for others, and that art is an effective vehicle for change. The screening is 7 p.m. Monday, September 28, in the Herman van Apeldoorn Film Center, Fulton Hall Room 111.
