Hataalii: 'Singe the Head'

Thursday, Sep 17, 2026 – Thursday, Oct 22, 2026 Gallery 128 (128 Conway Hall)

About this event

Hataalii is a Navajo artist whose multifaceted creative practice spans visual art, music, and poetry. His painting exhibition, Singe the Head (named after a step in the process of cooking an entire sheep head, a Navajo delicacy), explores the complexities of reservation life alongside the disorienting experience of urban existence, on display September 17-October 22, in Conway Hall's Gallery 128. Through oneiric, emotionally resonant imagery, Hataalii confronts themes of cultural absence and displacement, drawing on Navajo knowledge and memory to rekindle a sense of continuity within unfamiliar landscapes. His solo performance (guitar and voice) features elections from his growing catalog of songs, which weave together personal stories of life, identity, and community. A closing reception is 7:30 p.m. Thursday, October 22.
